Ney Lessons - 3
In this lesson, you will learn music notation and some basic musical terms.
What is “note”?
It is a sign used in musical notation to represent the relative duration and pitch of a sound. Notes are Do (C), Re (D), Mi (E), Fa (F), Sol (G), La (A), Si (B).
What is “stave” (staff)?
It is a set of five horizontal lines and four spaces, each of which represents a different musical pitch.
Please memorize the names of the lines and the spaces because I will use these names in the next lessons.
What is “note value”?
It indicates the relative duration of a note. There are some special signs that you need to memorize.

1
Vole Note (Semibreve):
Its length is typically equal to four beats in 4/4 time. Most other notes divide the whole note; half notes are played for one half the duration of the whole note, quarter notes are each played for one quarter the duration, etc. A whole note lasts half as long as a double whole note.

1/2
Half Note (Minim):
It is a note played for half the duration of a whole note and twice the duration of a quarter note. In time signatures with a denominator of 4, such as 4/4 or 3/4 time, the half note is two beats long.

1/4
Quarter Note (Crotchet) :
It is a note played for one quarter of the duration of a whole note and twice the duration of a eighth note.

1/8
Eighth Note (Quaver):
It is a note played for one quarter of the duration of a whole note and twice the duration of a eighth note.

1/16
Sixteenth Note (Semiquaver):
It is a note played for one sixteenth the duration of a whole note.

1/32
Thirty-second Note (Demisemiquaver):
It is a note played for one thirty-second the duration of a whole note.

1/64
Sixty-fourth Note (Hemidemisemiquaver):
It is a note played for one sixty-fourth the duration of a whole note.
This lesson is over. It is expected from you to memorize the names and the terms given above. If you have any question, please send e-mail to me.
