In this lesson, you will get more sounds and learn their names. Contrary to the other wind instruments, the middle parts of the fingers are used to cover the holes on ney, not fingertips (see the photos below). As I stated in Lesson – 1, the holes on ney, especially the thumb-hole in back, should be covered completely to make sound. By the way, the name of the thumb-hole in back is called “aşiran perdesi”.

Do Note (C): Now cover the holes shown in the photo below with your three fingers; ie., the fingers used for re note and the right-hand index finger. This sound is called “çargâh perdesi”.
Si Note (B): Now cover the holes shown in the photo below with your four fingers; ie., the fingers used for do note and the right-hand ring finger. This sound is called “segah”.
La Note (A): Now cover the holes shown in the photo below with your five fingers; ie., the fingers used for si note and the left-hand index finger. This sound is called “dügah”.

Sol Note (G): Now cover all the holes on ney as shown in the photo below with your six fingers; ie., the fingers used for la note and the left-hand ring finger. This sound is called “rast”.

Blow re note to have an idea as to what your embouchure should be like. After getting a good re sound, try do, si, la and sol sounds respectively. The sounds should be constant and clear, this is our only aim in this lesson, so do not try playing some music for now. At last, the second lesson is over.
What are expected from you after this lesson are:
- To memorize the name “aşiran perdesi”.
- To memorize the playing positions of the sounds (ie., the notes).
- To make good and clean sounds (especially, sol sound).
